These stories are usually about a father and sons bonding time on Sundays, but because of the holiday I really want to talk about how a 4 year old handles a long day of family interaction.
The Bunny arrives
My wife and I helped my son dye Easter eggs the Saturday night before easter. This was just as messy as you would think it would be. I know everyone has a different opinion or thought about how the bunny does his thing, but in our house we dye the eggs the night before and E. B. comes sometime before morning, hides the eggs and leaves a basket to put the eggs into. I decided to wake up early find all the eggs take a pic of where each one was located so that we did not have the pleasant aroma of rotting egg for the next couple of days. My son woke up super excited and once I explained the concept of the hunt he was up for the challenge. I am proud to say that he found all of the eggs in a reasonable amount of time. Once all the eggs were located it was time to dig thru the basket to open all of the little gifts that were hidden underneath all of the fake grass. I will be sending E.B. A request for next year to not use so much of this stuff because it gets everywhere. As soon as we were finished it was time to get going to my family’s house for breakfast and another hunt.
Hunt #2
When we arrived at my family’s house right away my son was ultra aware that the bunny could have possibly hid some eggs at this house just in case he were to have visited. He did. These eggs were the plastic type with candy and coins hidden inside of each one. He is still at the right age to where the candy is way more exciting than the money. It was 10:30 am and he was already up to about 10 Reese’s peanut butter eggs and a couple of little bags of M &Ms. This was the point I could tell it was going to be a really long day for mom and dad. We ate breakfast and relaxed for a little bit before heading off to the next hunt.
Hunt #3
My wife’s family Easter celebration has a lot of people, but the only kid is my son. The bunny had evidently known he was going to be here because he had hidden several dozen of the plastic eggs. This was awesome for Will because there was more here than had been at the other 2 hunts combined. At this point he was bouncing( literally) off the walls from the amount of sugar and chocolate he had consumed. We ate a lunch , watched the blues win there 3rd playoff game and talked. I have been coming to this gathering now for nearly 20 years and when I first started going there were a lot of kids heck I was practically a kid myself but over time those kids had become adults. At one point my son had told me that he was bored I told him to go play and It was really fun to watch my son play with all the people who used to say that they were bored. There are a lot of things that I really enjoy about fatherhood but one of my favorites is watching the different generations interact. Easter was a very long day for all of us but Will had so much fun that it was worth every bit and as for the sugar Lindsay and I will scrub his teeth tomorrow and we will all be back to normal.
