Dude Day Vol: 4

An awesome day with an awesome kid. My son requested to sleep in today. I obliged because I was really tired from the day before. I asked Will what he would like to do today, his answer cracked me up.  He said ” I want to go to the store to buy some food to feed the animals” I said why don’t we just go to the zoo. His eyes lit up at that and then he frowned. He said ” we can’t go to the zoo because the giraffe is having a baby” thanks April. I said we could just look at the snakes and ride the train. He smiled. I think that was a pretty sufficient solution. He demanded to just eat some cereal at the house.

The Zoo

It was pretty cold out today so I was not expecting a very big crowd and as it  turned out I was right. We parked in the south lot and went to the front entrance. My family signs up to be zoo members every year. Here is a link to check it out. St. Louis Zoo

The St. Louis Zoo is a free attraction, normally , but the different activities inside the Zoo cost money. We find a lot of value in the membership. I’ll tell you why. Normally parking costs 15.00, the children’s zoo is 4.00 per person, the train is 7.95 per person and the shows and feedings all cost money. When you purchase the membership you get a certain number of these free depending on your level of membership. We started off with the Herpatarium ( snake house). My son was pretty scared that the snakes could get out.  He really liked the Anaconda.

After the snake house we headed over to the Primate house. As we walked in Will says to me ” Do they have poop in there?” I said “of course”. He shrugged with understanding and we went on about our business. I have found that sometimes simple and short answers are the best. So many times I hear other parents explaining the intricacies of the body and how it functions and really the kid just wanted to know whether or not there was poop inside this particular location. He really was not that interested in the primates at all. He heard someone mention penguins so off to the penguins we go. I asked him what a penguin says and without skipping a beat he said ” Kawalski” for those of you that don’t know that is what the penguin from the Madagascar movies says. He really didn’t pay much attention to the penguins either or the polar bear for that matter. I’m pretty sure that like me he was just enjoying the day for what it was, an adventure filled with new places and people. We ate a huge basket of fries at the cafe and decided we would head for home.

Home

You know,on most weeks I don’t usually discuss much after we arrive home. This week though I noticed something that I had probably seen at least 500 times before. I know I have definitely been on the other side of it before. My sons eyes and body language when he heard the garage door open when he realized his Mom was home from work. It was pure love right there on his face. It is an amazing thing to see someone you love so much love someone else the same way. Man ,what a horrible description. There really is no way to describe it but it was really cool. Thanks for reading everyone.
